Economic Hard Times

December 2, 2008

This last week has been an incredible experience for baby boomers like myself.  We have enjoyed our entire working in professional life in a booming economy.  Now with probability of worldwide recession and tightening of economic growth, I am faced with some major hard mentioned decisions.  Growth is always pleasurable and is always good for people.  However, it seems that with growth comes greed and greedy people in high economic phases have put our whole economy in jeopardy requiring a governmental bailout.  This is another whole subject altogether; however this brought up some thoughts concerning my parents.

My parents lived with a depression and they have lived their entire lives with the “depression mindset.”  I have always thought it was silly.  I have always listened to them and shaken my head in agreement, however in the back of my mind, I have always said to myself “it is sad that someone has to live their life thinking that everything is going to be scarce.”  Guess what? All the comments and philosophies of my parents are now coming back to me, as I prepare for a possible extended recession.  I hope that the recession is brief and it corrects the greed and the excess in the economy, but if it becomes more extended, I will be going back to my parents and asking them for some more advice!!

Parents are truly a blessing from God, even when their advice does not seem relevant at the time.  It is incredible how as life goes on, echoes of parental advice seem to come to the forefront at the right time.  That is what I think about these days, as I try to sort out expanding the practice because the need is so huge in Houston, and balancing this fact with the financial realities in the society today.
